Developments in variety portfolio
HZPC’s sector Peeled supplies seed potatoes for locally grown, peeled and packed potatoes. Our customers are mainly supermarket chains, food companies and catering companies who buy the peeled potatoes, packaged under their own brand, from peeling companies. HZPC works with professional peeling companies in Germany, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. In the coming years we will be working on expanding our variety portfolio for the northern Europe market. We focus on varieties that meet the stringent requirements of our customers in terms of flesh texture, taste, nutritional value, consistency of properties and yield. We want to use our current portfolio of Challenger, Saline and Sagitta to further develop our markets in the Nordic countries and other parts of northwest Europe.

“Last year, HZPC Kantaperuna together with the Finnish retail market leader, S Group supermarkets, successfully introduced a Colomba product concept onto the market. This variety is new to the Finnish market and can now be bought in S Group supermarkets in 1kg packs. The packaging design is bright and modern, and specifically targeted at the younger generation of consumers. What makes this innovative for the Finnish market is that with this concept - packaging and additional marketing activities – we put the Colomba variety centre stage, and not just focus on what cooking type the potato is. This approach - whereby we present new varieties to the market as concepts, and focus on taste and quality - is paying off. Consumer appreciation is very high and sales are surpassing expectations. One of the core properties of Colomba is that it is a multipurpose potato. This variety is also popular in the Finnish Peeled sector, where it is found in both retail convenience products and the out-of-home segment.”
